Nehru Kund: The Cold Spring on the Road Out of Manali

Some of the Kullu Valley's most-loved spots ask very little of you. Nehru Kund is one of them — a small, spring-fed pool by the roadside just outside Manali, where travellers heading up toward Solang, Rohtang and Leh pause to cup a handful of cold, clear water. It takes ten minutes to visit and stays with you longer than that.

The spring and its story

The water here is famously cold and clear enough to drink. It is said to flow from Bhrigu Lake, the high glacial lake at around 4,300 m above Manali, its meltwater filtering down through the mountain to surface at this quiet pool. The name comes from Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, who was fond of Manali and is said to have drunk from this spring on his visits. A modest spot, then, with a quietly historic footnote.

How to reach it from Naggar

Nehru Kund sits on the Manali-Leh highway about 6 km north of Manali. From Naggar, it is a straightforward drive of roughly an hour — down the valley to Manali, then up the Leh road. Because it is right beside the highway, it works best as a stop woven into a larger day, whether you're heading to Solang Valley, starting the Bhrigu Lake trek, or driving toward Rohtang.

  • Distance from Naggar: around 26 km (about an hour by car)
  • Entry: free, open access, roadside
  • Best time: accessible most of the year; spring to autumn is most pleasant
  • Good to combine with: Solang Valley, the Bhrigu Lake trailhead, or a Rohtang-road day

Making the most of a small stop

There are usually a few tea and snack stalls nearby, so it's a fine place to grab a hot chai and stretch after the climb out of Manali. Bring a bottle if you'd like to taste the spring water, and give the spot a moment rather than treating it as a quick photo — the mountain air and the sound of running water are the whole point.

If you'd rather stay somewhere calmer than Manali town, Ghar in the Hills in Naggar puts you within easy reach of Nehru Kund and the whole upper valley, with orchard-and-mountain views to come home to.

Nehru Kund won't fill an afternoon, but it's a gentle, characterful pause on the way to bigger adventures. Threading together a Kullu Valley itinerary? Book your stay in Naggar and let the small stops surprise you.
