Manimahesh is one of Himachal's most revered pilgrimage treks. A glacial lake lies at about 13,000 feet at the foot of Manimahesh Kailash, a peak of roughly 18,564 feet, in the Budhil valley of Chamba district. Thousands walk there every year, and the trip can also suit fit trekkers who respect the pilgrimage rules. It is a long way from Naggar, so plan it as a dedicated trip.
When the Yatra Happens
The main yatra takes place around the eighth day of the bright half of the Bhadon month, roughly late August to September in the Gregorian calendar. Exact dates change every year and are announced by the district administration, so confirm them locally before you plan.
The Route
The lake is about 26 km from Bharmour. The most accessible approach starts in Chamba through Bharmour, with vehicles reaching Hadsar. From there, a trek of about 13 km leads to the lake. Dhanchho, a halt with a waterfall, is the main overnight stop for most pilgrims. Other approaches exist, including routes from Lahaul-Spiti over the Kugti pass and from Kangra and Mandi over the Kawarsi or Jalsu passes, but these are demanding and best left to experienced groups.
Holy Dips
Before the main lake, devotees bathe at Gauri Kund and Shiva Krotri, two sacred water bodies about 1.5 km away, which are traditionally associated with Gauri and Shiva.
Rules and Safety
- Register in advance and carry valid ID.
- Medical checks are held at the Hadsar base camp, and people who are unwell or above 75 are not allowed to proceed.
- Avoid solo travel and follow the permitted departure hours set by the administration.
- Carry warm clothing, rain gear and sturdy footwear, as weather at altitude changes quickly.
- Respect the shrine, keep the trail clean and follow all conduct rules.
Best Season and What to Pack
The walk is generally done from the end of the monsoon to early autumn, when the trail is dry and the weather is stable. Pack layers, a waterproof jacket, a headlamp, water purification tablets, energy snacks and a small first-aid kit. Start early each day so that you cross exposed sections before afternoon clouds roll in, and never push on if the weather turns.
Getting There from the Kullu Side
You will need to route via Mandi, Pathankot and Chamba, or through Kangra, before continuing to Bharmour and Hadsar. It is a long journey, so allow at least a full travel day each way and book any stay in advance during yatra season.
If you are planning the Kullu Valley leg of your trip, Ghar in the Hills is a cozy homestay right in Naggar, a restful base before or after a demanding pilgrimage.
Plan With Care
Manimahesh rewards preparation and humility. Check dates, register, pack warm and travel with others. When you are ready for a calmer chapter, book your stay at Ghar in the Hills and let the Kullu Valley help you recover.
