The Hampta Pass trek is often described as a trek of contrasts. In a few days you walk from the green, pine-clad Kullu Valley over a 4,270 m pass into the dry, moon-like landscape of Lahaul. It is rated easy to moderate, and Manali is just a short drive from Naggar, which makes it a handy option for first-time Himalayan trekkers.
Trek overview
Most itineraries take five days including the road transfers, covering roughly 26 to 30 km on foot. You walk from Jobra, near Manali, and finish at Chatru in Lahaul. Expect five to eight hours of walking each day on rocky, uneven trails.
- Day 1: Drive from Manali to Jobra (about 16 km), then trek to Chika at roughly 3,100 m.
- Day 2: Chika to Balu Ka Ghera, around 7 to 8 km, camping at about 3,600 m.
- Day 3: The big day: cross Hampta Pass at about 4,270 m and descend to Shea Goru.
- Day 4: Shea Goru to Chatru, then an optional drive towards Chandratal.
- Day 5: Drive back to Manali, around 85 km.
What makes it special
On the Kullu side you walk through forest and meadows, with the Indrasan and Deo Tibba peaks in view. After the pass the scenery shifts to barren ridges, glacial streams and big open skies. Many trekkers add a side trip to Chandratal Lake, the high-altitude Moon Lake in Spiti at about 4,300 m, which is usually accessible from late June to early October depending on snow and road conditions.
Best time to go
Mid-June to September is the season. June has more snow and cold, which snow lovers enjoy. July brings melting snow, flowers and waterfalls, though monsoon showers begin. August is lush but trails can be slippery, and September is often considered ideal with clear skies, stable weather and fewer crowds.
Costs and how to book
Most trekkers go with a registered trek operator that handles permits, camping, meals, guides and transport. Packages typically cost around ₹7,500 to ₹12,500 per person, but prices vary with season and inclusions. Check what is included, how experienced the guides are and what safety equipment they carry. Independent trekking is not recommended unless you are experienced.

- Carry a power bank, as campsites have no electricity.
- Take sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a rain jacket.
