Chintpurni Temple: A Shakti Peetha in the Una Hills

Himachal's lower hills hold a string of powerful goddess shrines, and few draw as many pilgrims as Chintpurni. Set on a forested ridge in Una district, the temple of Mata Chintpurni is counted among the great Shakti Peethas — a place people travel to from across north India to have their worries, quite literally, lifted. ('Chinta' means worry; the goddess is the one who dispels it.)

The legend and the shrine

Like all Shakti Peethas, Chintpurni traces its origins to the story of Sati, whose body, in the telling, fell to earth in pieces across the subcontinent — each spot becoming sacred. The goddess here is worshipped as Mata Chinnamastika, and unlike most temples there is no carved idol in the sanctum; devotees bow instead before a rounded stone, a 'pindi', that embodies the deity. Four Shiva temples — Kaleshwar, Narayan, Muchkund and Shiva Bari — stand as guardians around the main shrine, and pilgrims often try to visit all of them.

Visiting the temple

  • Timings: the temple is generally open from around 4 am to late evening, with morning and evening aartis.
  • Entry: there is no entry fee; special queue arrangements come into force on busy days.
  • Crowds: the shrine is busiest during the Navratras and the great Shravan (Sawan) Ashtami fair in the monsoon, when lakhs of pilgrims arrive. For a calmer darshan, come on an ordinary weekday.
  • Etiquette: modest dress is appreciated, and you will leave footwear at stalls near the entrance.

How to reach

Chintpurni sits near Bharwain, about 40 km from Una town. The nearest airport is Kangra (Gaggal), roughly 60 km away, while Amb Andaura is the closest railhead at around 20 km. Buses and taxis run frequently from Una, Hoshiarpur, Chandigarh and the Punjab plains. From Naggar the drive is around 220 km via Mandi, Palampur and Kangra — a full day on the road — so plan it as an overnight or as part of a wider Kangra circuit rather than a quick hop.

Best time to go

March to October brings pleasant weather for the visit and the short walk up to the shrine. Skip the peak fair days if crowds aren't your thing; the hills around Una are gentle and green once the monsoon has passed.

Chintpurni pairs naturally with the Kangra valley's other great shrines, and many travellers thread several into one journey. If you would rather anchor that trip in the quiet of the Kullu valley, Ghar in the Hills in Naggar makes a restful base to set out from and return to.

Whether you come as a pilgrim or simply a curious traveller, Chintpurni offers a window into the living faith of the Himalayan foothills. Planning a temple trail through Himachal? Book your stay at Ghar in the Hills and begin in the hills.
