Bhagsu Waterfall is one of the easiest and most popular outings near McLeodganj in the Dharamshala area. The route passes an old temple, a lively cluster of cafes and a waterfall of about 30 feet. It fits neatly into a Kangra Valley trip that you might add to a Himachal itinerary starting from Naggar.
How to Get There
The falls are around 2 km from McLeodganj and 3 km from Dharamshala on the road connecting the two. You can walk, take an autorickshaw or hire a taxi to Bhagsu village, then continue on foot. The usual starting point is the Bhagsunag Temple.
The Walk
From the temple, the trail runs about 2.1 km and takes around an hour at an easy pace. It is rated easy to moderate, with a stony path and a few steps. Set aside one to two hours for the visit, longer if you stop at the cafes along the way.
Bhagsunag Temple
The temple is a well-known Shiva shrine at the entrance to the walk, and it is traditionally linked to the Bhagsu name. Dress modestly and remove your shoes before entering the temple compound.
Timings and Fees
The area is open roughly from 7 am to 9 pm daily and there is no entry fee. Confirm timings locally, since they can vary by season.
Best Season
October and November bring clear skies and comfortable weather. The monsoon makes the trail slippery and the stream fast, while mid-winter can be very cold and icy, so both periods call for extra care.
Combining It with Other Stops
Bhagsu pairs well with a visit to the Tibetan quarter of McLeodganj, a cup of tea at a local cafe and a sunset view over the Dhauladhar range. If you have more time, you can extend your walk towards Dharamkot, or simply return to your stay for an early night. Keep an eye on the clock, as lanes get busy in the evening and taxis are harder to find after dark.
Practical Tips
- Wear shoes with a good grip rather than slippers.
- The water is very cold, so think twice before swimming.
- Small cafes near the falls serve tea, coffee and snacks with views.
- The walk can be tiring for very young children or seniors, so go slowly.
- Carry cash and take your rubbish back with you.
